Finish The Year Strong!
Why Your 2027 Success Starts Before January 1
Isn't it funny how we approach the end of every year?
November rolls around, the holidays are approaching, and suddenly we're talking about everything we're going to do differently in January.
We're setting goals.
Making resolutions.
Creating vision boards.
Planning for a fresh start.
And don't get me wrong. I love a good goal!
But here's my question.
Why are we waiting until January?
What is it about turning the calendar that makes us think everything will suddenly be different?
Because here's the reality.
A new calendar doesn't create new habits. New decisions do.
And if we're not willing to change what we're doing today, why would we expect January 1 to look any different?
Don’t Drag Your Chaos Into 2027
If you've spent any time with me, you know I talk a lot about finding calm in the chaos.
But here's something I've learned.
Sometimes the chaos we complain about is the very chaos we continue to allow.
Ouch, right?
Think about it.
That disorganized CRM you've been meaning to clean up.
The inconsistent workflows everyone complains about.
The team member who still doesn't understand their responsibilities.
The process that creates unnecessary work every single day.
The conversations you've been avoiding.
We know these things are creating friction.
We talk about them.
We get frustrated by them.
We tell ourselves we'll address them when things slow down.
But when exactly is that going to happen?
Here's what I've found.
If we don't make time to address what's creating the chaos, we'll keep making time to deal with its consequences.
And those consequences have a funny way of following us right into the new year.
What we tolerate in November often becomes what frustrates us in February.
Are You Running Offense or Playing Defense?
One of the biggest challenges I see in agencies is that we're so busy handling what's right in front of us that we never make time to address what's causing the problems in the first place.
And I'll admit something.
I'm guilty of this too!
When there's something I really don't want to deal with, I can suddenly find all kinds of things that "need me right now."
Anyone else?
It's amazing how productive we can convince ourselves we're being when we're actually avoiding the thing that needs our attention most.
But that's not running offense.
That's playing defense.
Running offense means addressing something before it becomes another fire to put out.
It means making time to fix the workflow instead of continuing to work around it.
It means having the uncomfortable conversation instead of allowing the frustration to grow.
It means making decisions today that prevent unnecessary work tomorrow.
And sometimes, that requires us to stop being busy long enough to actually be productive.
Finishing Strong Doesn’t Mean Doing Everything
I think this is especially important as we approach the end of the year.
Finishing strong doesn't mean cramming twelve months of unfinished work into the last eight weeks.
It doesn't mean adding more to an already overwhelming to-do list.
And it certainly doesn't mean running yourself into the ground just so you can say you checked everything off.
There's a difference between being busy and being intentional.
Sometimes the most productive thing we can do is stop doing something.
Simplify it.
Delegate it.
Automate it.
Or let it go altogether.
One of the questions I encourage agency teams to ask is:
Does this activity help grow our business or retain a customer?
If the answer is no, we need to take a hard look at why we're spending our time on it.
Now, that doesn't mean we ignore the responsibilities required to run a business. Of course not.
But it does mean we challenge ourselves to eliminate unnecessary work and find more efficient ways to handle the things that must get done.
Because time is one thing none of us can create more of.
And how we choose to spend it matters.
Professionally.
Personally.
And with the people we love.
The goal isn't to finish the year exhausted. It's to finish the year knowing we were intentional.
Before You Set New Goals, Examine Your Foundation
I love helping agencies set goals.
But you know what I love even more?
Making sure they have the foundation to support them.
Because growth without structure doesn't eliminate chaos.
It usually creates more of it.
Before you start stacking new goals on top of old frustrations, take a look at three things.
The WHO.
Does everyone understand their roles and responsibilities?
Is ownership clear?
Does your team know who's responsible for what, or are things still falling through the cracks because everyone assumes someone else is handling them?
The WHAT.
Have you established consistent workflows for the activities happening in your agency every day?
Or does everyone have their own version of how things should be done?
The HOW.
Have you defined the processes that support those workflows?
Are they documented?
Are they efficient?
Is your team consistently following them?
And are you maximizing the technology you already have available?
These aren't necessarily exciting things to work on.
I get it.
It's much more fun to talk about big goals, new opportunities, and all the things we're going to accomplish.
But here's the problem.
You can't build tomorrow's success on yesterday's unresolved problems.
At least not without creating a whole lot of unnecessary frustration along the way.
Don't spend all your time planning what you want to accomplish in 2027 without examining what's going to support getting you there.
Small Changes Create Big Momentum
Here's the good news.
You don't have to completely overhaul your business before December 31.
In fact, please don't try!
Start small.
Maybe it's finally establishing a consistent process for handling claims follow-up.
Maybe it's cleaning up your CRM so your team can actually find the information they need.
Maybe it's clarifying who's responsible for your non-pay process.
Maybe it's eliminating a redundant report or meeting.
Maybe it's having a conversation you've been putting off.
One decision.
One improvement.
One commitment.
Then follow through.
Because small, consistent improvements create capacity.
And capacity creates opportunity.
You don't have to fix everything to start moving forward.
You just have to start.
My Challenge to You: One Decision. One Action.
Between now and December 31, I want you to identify three things.
1. ONE THING TO FINISH.
What's something you've been putting off that needs closure?
Maybe it's a project.
A decision.
A conversation.
Something that's been sitting in the back of your mind taking up space and energy.
Finish it.
2. ONE THING TO LEAVE BEHIND.
What's something that doesn't deserve another year of your time?
An inefficient process?
An unnecessary responsibility?
A habit that's creating more work than value?
A frustration you actually have the ability to change?
Address it.
Simplify it.
Or let it go.
3. ONE THING TO START NOW.
What's one small action you can take today that will put you ahead of where you'd be if you waited until January?
Maybe it's documenting one workflow.
Scheduling time with your team.
Blocking time for income-producing activities.
Or finally making a change you've been talking about for months.
Whatever it is...
Start now.
2027 Doesn’t Start January 1st
There's something powerful about starting a new year with momentum instead of a list of things we wish we'd done differently.
Imagine walking into January with a few lingering frustrations already resolved.
With clearer expectations.
Better workflows.
More intentional habits.
And a team that isn't waiting for the new year to start doing things differently.
That's what finishing strong looks like to me.
Not doing everything.
Not being perfect.
But being intentional.
We can't control everything 2027 will bring.
But we can control how we prepare for it.
And that starts with three things:
Clarity about what matters.
Courage to address what isn't working.
Commitment to follow through.
Because how we finish today influences how we start tomorrow.
And how we finish this year will absolutely influence how we begin the next.
The best way to start 2027 strong is to be intentional about how we finish 2026.
So don't wait for January.
Your fresh start can begin today.
