Why Life Insurance Conversations Are Really Love Conversations

Life insurance can be an uncomfortable conversation.

I understand why.

Nobody wants to sit around imagining their own death.

But I've never really thought of life insurance as a conversation about dying.

I think it's a conversation about the people who keep living.

Who Depends on You?

That's really where the conversation begins.

Who depends on your paycheck?

Who lives in the house you're paying for?

Who shares the dreams you're building?

Who would still need groceries?

Childcare?

College?

A mortgage payment?

Time to grieve?

Those are the people we're talking about.

Love Has Financial Consequences

We don't like putting dollar amounts around relationships.

And we shouldn't.

You can't put a dollar value on a spouse or parent.

That's not what life insurance does.

It helps protect the financial responsibilities that person leaves behind.

The mortgage doesn't know someone died.

The electric bill doesn't know.

The grocery store doesn't know.

Life continues.

And unfortunately, so do many of the expenses.

The Conversation Is an Act of Service

Sometimes we're afraid to bring up life insurance because we don't want to make someone uncomfortable.

But avoiding an important conversation because we're uncomfortable doesn't serve the customer.

We can approach it with compassion.

We can ask thoughtful questions.

We can educate without pressuring.

And then we can let the customer decide.

The Why Behind the What

So why do we ask customers to think about something none of us wants to imagine?

Because we're not really asking them to think about dying.

We're asking them to think about the people they love.

We're asking:

If you couldn't be here tomorrow, what would you want to still be possible for them?

That's not a sales conversation.

That's a love conversation.

And that's the why behind the what.
